摘要
中国文化以谦虚为美德、推崇“贬已尊人”准则 ,称赞语往往采用“独立”的礼貌面貌子方略。西方人倾向于平等待人 ,故称赞语往往采用“参与”的礼貌面子方略 ;称赞目标的选择必须符合社会价值标准 ,对标准的偏离将会极大影响称赞语的交际效果 ;中英称赞语语法结构和词汇选择方面的差异体现了两个民族不同的文化主流和思维方式 ;
Based on some famous scholar’s theories about social, psychological and cultural property of language, namely the theory of Ron Scllon and Suzanne Wong, Scollon, Dancid, W. Carroll, Brown and Levinson, Goffman…ect, this paper analyzes the Chinese and English compliments from three aspects-the face strategies, culture value adoption and its fuzziness. It points out that Chinese culture takes modesty for virtues, extols the criterion of putting down oneself and overrating others; meanwhile the face strategy of independence is usually adopted in the Chinese compliments too. Westerners are inclined to be equal to everyone, so the face strategy of involvement is usually adopted in English compliments; the choice of complimenting target must conform to the social value standard, and the deviating from the standards will greatly influence the communication result of compliments; the differences of the grammar structure and the choice of words in Chinese and English compliments reflect the different main trends of culture and thinking models of the two nations; the fuzziness of compliments exists in both Chinese and English compliments.
