House metaphors in writings have been developed with literature in the United States. For Americans, most of whom are immigrants, settlement and house have very special and important meanings in politics, economy, culture, psychology, and figurative sense. This paper analyses different descriptions of houses in the works of Thoreau, Allan Poe, Hawthorne, Henry James, Fitzgerald, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and so on, to explain the different metaphors expressed by different houses for the readers to understand the works better.
