摘要 Edward Hopper, considered one of the foremost realists of Americanart, provided some of the modern era’s most recognizable and disturbing images. The word Hopperesque brings tomind scenes of solitary people, foreboding houses, and almost unbearable tension. The sense of desolate solitudethat pervades the work such as Nighthawks helps explain why it has become an American iconography, Nighthawksand his other images from this period dovetailed perfectly with a nation that was recognized its uniqueness as aeconomic and cultural force. Graving doubts about American Dream and the other side of the commercializedAmerican society in his own way, Hopper achieved his place as the leading Silent Witness.
