An Answer to the Refutation Made by Wang Zhirao about the Expression “Mao Erni”

许多方言词中“猫”字共有 14类隐实示虚趣难词。从唐代始 ,连续到近当代 ,词例大增 ,而且有系列性。“猫儿匿”仅是其中的一个。这类词语的理据是语言研究的薄弱之处 ,易于误看成比喻 ,王志尧对“猫儿匿”新释也是如此。

Among many Chinese dialects, there are 14 which contai ni ng the connotative meanings concerning “Mao Erni” as a difficult euphonious wo rd. From the Tang Dynasty to the present time, the examples of the usage have be en increased with the completion of its own system and features. The usage “Mao Erni” is just one of them. The morphological explanation of the usage bares th e weak point of the modern linguistic research. It is easily inclined to regard the usage as simile, which is proved in the new explanation given by Mr. Wang Zh irao. The correct explanation of the usage could be made only through the furthe r understanding of the linguistics and cultural background concerning these inte resting and difficult euphonious words and expressions.
