在上古时代，祖先主要依靠结绳纪事，以后渐渐发明了文字，开始用动物的甲骨来作为书写材料。后来又利用竹片和木片(即简牍)以及缣帛作为写绘材料。但由于缣帛太昂贵，竹木太笨重，于是便促成了纸的发明。据考证，我国西汉时已开始了纸的制作。

Paper is one of the four great inventions in ancient China with long history.Papers used in ancient Chinese paintings are verydaintily. Chinese paper artisans produced various kinds of paper in accordance with the development and requirement of Chinesecalligraphy and painting.Therefore,it became one of the four treasures of the study.
