摘要
"学院"是高等教育机构的基本组织形式。本文从词源和历史发展的角度对英语中与"学院"相关的几个用语的源流及其在英、美等国的用法进行考证和辨析,指出"学院"是一个具有丰富学术内涵的语汇,它不仅反映着高等教育观念的历史沿革和学术组织制度的创新历程,而且体现着高等教育学术组织的多样性和层阶性。在此基础上,本文指出了目前国内在翻译这一用语时存在的问题,并就如何英译"学院"提出了一些建设性的意见。
Xueyuan is a basic organizational form in higher education. In the perspectives of etymology and historical conceptual changes, the paper provides detailed analysis of the origins of several terms in English related to the Chinese term of 'xueyuan . The author points out that xueyuan is a vocabulary with rich academic connotations. It not only reflect the evolution of higher education concepts and the innovation of academic organization system, it also symbolizes the diversification and stratification of academic organizations in higher education. Based on the analysis, the paper points out three major problems in the translation of this Chinese term into English, and puts forward some examples and suggestions for proper English translation.
