Declines in cognitive function accompany normal aging i n humans. More recent studies have demonstrated that normal aging and cognitive dy sfunction is associated with significant cell loss/atrophy and reduction in cell metabolic functions in nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM). The changes of NBM als o affected the morphology and functions of neurons in cortex. Although the mecha nism of these age-related changes remained poorly defined, the experimental stud ies from animals showed that neurotrophic dysfunction would be responsible for i t. In this review, we discussed these age-related changes and its neurotrophic mechanism in details.
