OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of acupuncture in inhibiting the behavior of rats with depression. METHOD 50 male adult rats with similar Open-field rating were randomly divided into a normal control group, a model group, a blank control group, a medication group and an acupuncture group, with 10 rats in each group. Long-term unpredictable medium irritability was given to cause depression. Then, Open-field method and sweet water consumption experiment were employed to observe changes in the rats’ behavior. RESULT Compared with the normal control group, the Open-field ratings and sweet water consumption in the model group decreased; compared with the blank control group, the Open-field ratings and sweet water consumption in the treatment groups increased; there is no marked difference between the acupuncture group and the medication group. CONCLUSION Acupuncture treatment can modify the behavior abnormality of rats, the effect of which is similar to that of fluoxetine.
