Safe Valve: the Implicit Function of the "Four Clean-ups" Movement

四清运动是介于大跃进与文化大革命之间的一场政治运动,其起因与大跃进时期基层干部的恶劣行为有关。在这场运动中,大批农村基层干部受到冲击,同时也让饱受疾苦的农民出了怨气,因此降低了文化大革命中农民对基层干部的批判强度,客观上稳定了农村社会。四清运动中重新划分成份的做法,在扩大打击面的同时,也消除了一些潜在的反对力量。

The 'Four Clean-ups' Movement is the political purge occuring between the Great Leap Forward and the Great Cultural Revolution. In this purge, a large group of grassroot officials in the rural areas were attacked and disgraced for their wicked behaviours during the Great Leap Forward. In this way, the resentment of the suffering peasants was somewhat vented. Otherwise, their resentment would have been pent-up for an even greater explosion in the Great Cultural Fievolution.
