悲剧意识是海明威思想体系和文学创作中最显著的特点之一。从《太阳照常升起》到《永别了 ,武器》 ,再到《丧钟为谁而鸣》和《老人与海》 ,海明威的悲剧意识经历了对悲剧的宿命论式的接受 ,对悲剧的自觉规避 ,以及与悲剧的积极抗争三个重要发展阶段。这些深刻的变化反映了海明威在探索生命意义上的积极成果 ,也表现了他在艺术追求上的不断成熟。
Tragic sense is one of the most remarkable features of Hemingway's ide ological system and literary creation. From The Sun Also Rises to A Farewe ll to Arms and then to For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, Hemingway' s tragic sense undergoes three important stages of development: fatalistic accep tance of tragedy, conscious escape from it, and active struggle with it. These p rofound changes reflect the positive results of Hemingway's search for life's me aning and demonstrate his steady steps to maturity in artistic pursuit.
