A Second Comment on Kang Youwei and the Confucian Classics in Modern Script

社会进化思想是戊戌维新中康有为变法理论的重要组成部分 ,体现康有为这一思想的“大同三世”说形成于西方达尔文主义思想输入中国之前 ,确切地说是在严复翻译的《天演论》正式出版之前。因此 ,康有为的社会进化思想不是导源于西方进化论 ,而是来自儒家今文经学。康有为受到西方进化论的影响是在戊戌政变以后 ,这主要反映在他所著的《大同书》

The idea that society would evolve in a better form was an important element in Kang Youweis theory of constitutional reform during the Reform Movement of 1898. The theory of a great harmonious society conceived by Kang Youwei was formed before the introduction of Western Darwinism into China, and prior to the publication of Evolution and Ethics translated by Yan Fu. Kangs concept of social evolution was therefore not derived from the Western theory of evolution, but from the Confucian classics in modern script. After the Reform Movement of 1898 the Western theory of evolution had some influence on Kang, as reflected in his A Book of Great Harmony .
