The Reconsideration of the Age When The Literary Selection (《文选》) Was Compiled

萧统受敕修《华林遍略》的触动，自天监十五年开始撰集诗文合集 《类文》，天监末成千卷巨帙。在《类文》初具规模时，又决定约略为适中的选 本，在普通初成《文选》三十卷。《文选》所录诗文的作年，严格限定在天监 十八年之前。在《文选》编撰中，何思澄、刘孝绰出力为多。与《文选》的编 撰几乎同时，《类文》初稿被重新规划，诗、文分编，于普通四年前编成《正 序》和《古今诗苑英华》。《古今诗苑英华》的编撰，刘孝绰亦尝出力。普通五 年以后，萧统身处多事之秋，除继续完成素所用心编校的《陶渊明集》外，其 他编撰之事已无力涉及。

Prince Xiao Tong (萧统), inspired by the royal edition Hua Lin Bian Lue (《华林遍 略》), began to compile the collection of poetry and prose, by name of Lei Wen (《类文》), in the fifteenth year of the age Tianjian (天监), and accomplished a tremendous edition of a thousand volumes in the end the age. Based on this edition, he decided to make a moderate selection, and at last accomplished The Literary Selection of thirey volumes in the beginning of the age Putong (普通). All the poetry and the prose entering The Literary selection were strictly confined to those written before the eighteenth year of the age Tianjian. Mr. He Sicheng (何思澄) and Mr. Xiaochuo (刘孝绰) contributed much to the compilation of The Literary Selection. Almost in the Same time, the manuscripts of Lei Wen were reorganised, and the poetry and the prose therein were edited separately accomplished as Gu Jjin Shi Yuan Ying Hua (《古今诗苑英华》) and (《正序》) in the fourth year of the age Putong. Mr. Liu Xiaochuo as well played a quite important role in compiling Gu Jjin Shi Yuan Ying Hua. After the fifth year of the age Putong, His Majesty Xiao Tong came across much trouble and could not continue to work on these compilations except that of the works of Tao Yuanming (陶渊明), to which he had all the time exerted great efforts.
