What people have been known about the Classic of Mountains and seas since its appearance nearly two thousand years is just a half of it, i.e. its written part. As to another half, i.e. its drawn part, people have known much less. The book is in China the first one with both characters and pictures. Despite the loss of original pictures, and the two same-named books, 'Pictures of Classic of Mountains and Seas', writen separately by Zhang Sengyao(张僧繇)in the Six Dynasties and Shu Ya(舒雅)in the Song Dynasty, the old tradition to narrate with pictures was kept in the later same-named book drawn and circulated between the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. In this essay the author investigates, based on collection and comparison of the old books, the origin and development of three editions of them, analyses the characteristics and cultural significance of the picture books drawn in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and approaches their narrative style to relate with pictures.
