Our first buildings in the 1960s were keenly influenced by the early vernacular architecture of Australia. To us, the vernacular made environmental sense. It adapted inappropriate English models sensitively to our climate and landscape. It became easily, almost languidly, extendable, and embodied ingenuity in the use of materials and structure. Ours was an anti-modernist approach, delighting in the romanticism which buildings of regional character could convey, while differing markedly from place to place in response to changing environments.
