Diary of a Madman is a spiritual epic in the new China. The diary tells of the protagonist's growing obsession with the cannibalism practiced around him. As his paranoia increases, and with it his sense that cannibalism is widespread and prevalent even within his family, he despairs of saving himself. The language in the diary is poignant, building up a symbolic imagery, and thus being universally accepted by the readers. However, it is concluded that the reinterpretation of the work is far from over.
