A Comparative Study Between Chinese and English Social Appellation Systems

社交称谓语作为一套约定俗成的社会交际符号,是历史文化积淀的产物,具有鲜明的民族特色。中英社交称谓语的巨大差异是中英文化在语言层面上对社会等级权势、血缘亲缘关系及个体社会地位的投影与折射。因此,社交称谓语的研究是不同民族文化之间实现沟通与交流的桥梁和纽带,是社会语言学研究的重要课题。

As a set of established social communicative symbols, social appellations are the result of historical culture with distinct national features. The differences between Chinese and English social appellations are reflections of each culture on social hierarchical power, blood and affinity relationship and individual's social status linguistically. Thus, the study of social appellations is a bridge to facilitate the interflow of different cultures, and a significant topic in sociolinguistics.
