The current scientific consensus recognizes both linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid as essential fatty acids in human. As more is known about the interrelationship of their metabolism, the need for an optimal balance between the n-6 to n-3 fatty acids is acknowledged. An inappropriate balance of these essential fatty acids is major risk factor for lifestyle-related disease including western-type cancers cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and allergic hyper-reactivity, while a proper balance helps maintain and even improve health. Some recommendation have made on the basis of the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids. An optimal balance between the two series should be kept 1 :1. Seabuckthorn seed oil contains the optimal balance between the two series of linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid, and rich in fat soluble vitamins and carotenoids, as well as other active constituents. Therefore, Seabuckthorn seed oil is useful for the prevention of lifestyle-related disease.
