Social unacceptability of prewedding pregnancy and factors influencing adherence to norms in sexually active couples newly registered in Shanghai

世界卫生组织近年来提出生殖健康的一项重要内容就是要减少非期望妊娠及人工流产[1].进入九十年代以来,上海青年发生性行为的年龄在逐渐提前,约2/3婚前人流的妇女均从未使用过避孕措施[2].年轻男女在领取结婚证书后从法定观念来看已是合法夫妇,如发生性关系或妊娠似乎都无可非议.

Objectives To know the prevalence of adherence to the social norms of unacceptability of prewedding pregnan- cy among sexually active couples registered in Shanghai and factors related.Methods A cohort of 7573 couples was followed up since their marital registration up to the 15th month after wedding in two districts of Shanghai.A binary logistic regression model with 11 eovariates was fitted.Results 1186 couples(15.7%)had sexual intercourses prior to their wedding.About 76.4% of them,however,did not adopt any contraceptive measures.The main reasons were planned pregnancy(58.5%) and already existing pregnancy(18.9%).About 30.9% of these couples(367)thought that conception before wedding is not proper according to the Chinese traditional norms;55.6% of them,however,did not take any contraceptive measures.The main factors influencing registered couples to adhere to this norm were couples' intention of delaying first conception after wed- ding,frquency of sexual intercourses prior to wedding,wife's independence due to having a job,wife's status of sexuality after wedding,etc.Conclusions It is necessary to advise registered couples to delay conception properly and adhere to the social norms as well as to prevent unwanted pregnancy by timely adopting contraceptive measures.
