摘要
In what environments and on what background was the ancient Chinese civilization evolved? What are its characteristic features? And what is the course of its development like? These problems are all of important academic value. Therefore, the Center for the Study of Ancient Civilization, CASS, held the “International Symposium on the Origin and Initial Development of Chinese Civilization”in Beijing from August 1st to 3rd, 2001. The attendants discussed mainly theories of civilization's origin and related concepts, standards of civilization, and the developmental road of ancient Chinese civilization. They also inquired into the questions of how to judge the degree of civilization represented by archaeological remains, how to strengthen the co-operation of archaeology with other disciplines, how to enhance the scientificalness and standardization of the studies of civilization' s origin, and how to deepen these studies.
