摘要
In June 1994, 23 ancient wells were discovered one after another in an area of 2000 sq m for the foundations of the new office building of the Yancheng Municipal Government. They are varied in structure, built of bricks different in size, and dated to a time spanning more than 1, 500 years. According to the stratigraphical positions of their mouths, their structural features, and the objects unearthed from them, the wells can be divided into five phases, i.e. the late Eastern Han, Six Dynasties,Sui-Tang, Song-Yuan and Ming periods, showing a clear chronological sequence of successive stages.Their discovery provides certain material data for studying the evolution of brick wells in those times.
