The Connection and Convergence of Conservative and Radical Thoughts in Chinese Modern Cultural Trend

在中国近代文化潮流中,以如何对待传统文化和西方文化为焦点,形成了文化保守与文化激进两大思潮,但复杂和充满矛盾的近代社会使得二者的关系也绝非一般人想象的那样简单。由于受政治因素的影响,它们的对立与分歧被夸大,相互影响、启发的关系被忽视了。其实,二者有时有着共同的努力方向和认识上的某些共识,彼此间也非壁垒森严,存在着师友关系和互相渗透、转化的情况。之所以如此,是因为它们均产生在相同的社会条件下,面临着共同的时代主题,因而存在联系和共同之处也就不足为奇了。

In Chinese modern cultural trend, focusing on how to deal with traditional culture and western one, two thoughts of cultural conservatism and cultural radicalism were formed. But the complicated and conflicting modern society rendered the connection between two thoughts not so simple as it seems. Some political factors exaggerated their contradiction and divergence, meanwhile, their mutual influence and inspiration were neglected. In fact, some common direction of effort, some common sense, some mutual cooperation, infiltration and conversion existed between both thoughts. The reason is, that they were both formed in the same social context, facing the same subject of the age.
