On Certain Theoretical Problems about Shuangshengfu Zi

双声符字是指由音同或音近的两个声符构成的字,包括两个部件都只表音而不表义的纯双声符字和一个或两个部件都兼义的双声符字。其逐渐增多是汉字音化趋势的必然结果。双声符字的来源主要有:"造字之初就是双声符字"、"在只表读音的假借字上累加声符而成"、"在表意初文上再添加声符,原来的表意初文也表音"、"在造字时有意选用一个构件即充当意符又作声符"、"两个音义均相同或相近的构件组成一个双声符字"、"由于语音的变化而形成的双声符字"、"方言字"、"讹变、饰笔、类化等原因形成的双声符字"等八种途径。

The distinguishing feature of shuangshengfu zi, or, the ancient Chinese characters with double sound symbols, is that the characters are composed of two parts with same or similar sounds. This type of characters can be divided into two categories as their components can be with or without certain meanings. There are three causes for the emergence of shuangshengfu zi. Firstly, it was decided by the relationship between characters and language. Secondly, there appeared more and more shuangshengfu zi under the trend that more importance was attached to the sounds of Chinese characters. Thirdly, there emerged much more chracters of this type in the Warring State Period under the influence of dialects. There were eight ways to construct shuangshengfu zi .
