TAPs translation process studies, often abbreviated as TAPs translation studies, refers to think-aloud protocols-based researches into the process of translating. This paper first traces the utility of these protocols in translation studies back to its earliest cases in the 1980s. Highlighting what translation scholars have been able to achieve through their experimentation with TAPs over the past two decades, particularly in topic areas such as translation strategies and translation units, the paper then identifies the trends in the application of this method to translation research. It rounds up the retrospection with a discussion on its implications to translation pedagogy.
