本文从《说文解字》所下定义和所举字例着手,阐述了转注造字法作为一种专为同义词造字之方法的内涵和特点,进而论证这种造字法并非只是简单地创制了一些字符而已。指出其对保存并丰富汉语词汇、推动汉语词汇向双音、多音发展的重要作用,以及它对我们研究汉语词汇史、语音史等方面的学术价值。

The significance and characteristics of mutually explanatory character approach are a major concern in this article. Many people assume that mutually explanatory character approach merely create some new characters. But taking the definition and examples given in Hsu Shu's Shuo-wen as a starting point, this article elaborates that mutually explanatory character approach, specially devised for synonyms, has much greater significance. It plays an important role in conserving and enriching Chinese vocabulary, and at the same time, it gives Chinese an impetus to develop towards disyllabie and poly syllable words. It is of extraordinary academic value in the research on Chinese lexicology and phonetics.
