A General Description of the Protective Forests in the Great Plains in USA

After systematically summarizing the development and research history of protec-tive forests in the great plains in USA the programming design, afforestation techniques,management and benefits of these forests, the problems existent and the development trend,the author points out that many achievements have been scored in the fields of programmingdesign, afforestation techniques and evluation of benefits in the construction of protectiveforests in China, but weaknesses exist in the research and practice of forest management.At present time more problems crop up, especially the absence of a universal theory that canguide properly the practical management of protective forests. For this reason, theresearches on the theory and practice concerning young stand management, intermediatecutting, the forest maturity and regeneration should be reinforced so as to set up a man-agement system, to manage well the present protective forest systems and ultimately attainthe purpose of sustained utilizaion of these forests.
