Sino-Foreign Negotiations around Lincheng Incident

临城劫车案虽为突发事件,但因其而引发的中外交涉,却与当时的中外关系、列强联盟及北京政治相纠葛,大体反映出20世纪20年代前半期中国对外关系的某些基本特征,即每有对外交涉,中国方面可以进行一定程度的抗争,这主要是由于社会各界和舆论压力以及职业外交家群体的努力所致,但最后的结果仍多让步,反映出当时中国外交之虚弱地位,以及职业外交家群体在挽回中国国家利权方面的努力之有限性。

Although Lincheng Incident was unexpected, the Sino-foreign negotiations around it, which complicated with the Sino-foreign relationship, foreign powers and the politics of Beijing, reflected generally the fundamental characteristic of the Sino-foreign relationship in first half of 1920's. That means, when China negotiated with the foreign powers, she could took a strong stand to some extent in the very beginning, which was mainly a result of the support by social pressure and efforts of the professional diplomat groups, but ultimately would yielded, which reflected the weak position of the Chinese diplomacy in that time, and the limited result of the professional diplomat groups working to maintain China's national rights.
