The Meditator at Highgate: an Analysis of Coleridge's Thoughts in His Late Years

S. T. Coleridge was not only a leading English Romantic poet but also one of the pioneers of liberal-humanism in traditional English cultural criticism. This paper analyzes his article On the Constitution of the Church and the State—According to the Idea of Each, written in his last years at Highgate. The article reflects the change of his thoughts in his late years, from metaphysical philosophy to post-metaphysical social and cultural criticism as well as his re-discovery of the identity of the intelligentsia. Coleridge exerted his unique influence on the trend of English liberal-humanistic social and cultural criticism.
