Tennessee Williams was one of the most outstanding American playwrights after the Second World War. He won the Pulitzer Prize twice and New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award four times for his artistic achievements. The Streetcar Named Desire is his most representative work. The conflict and clash between Stanley and Blanche serve as the main theme throughout the play. One most important feature of this play is its metaphoricalness and that demonstrated by the fight between Blanche and Stanley, the two different sexes is the most representative. The paper devotes itself to the analysis of the metaphoricalness indicated by the conflict between two sexes in the aspect of history, society and psychology, and at the same time, to elaborating on its rich connotations and aesthetic values.
