Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) witnessed a vital stage in the development and innovation of the Chinese writing system known as Characters. Specific aspects of the usage of the Characters during this period are well presented in some excavations. Some Eastern Han wooden/bamboo slips concerning medical matters were unearthed in Wu Wei City, Gansu Province, in 1972. The slips were some ancient medical prescriptions, by which the usage of everyday Characters during that period was reflected. This paper offers an investigation and interpretation of the development and causes of the usage of some abnormal Characters appeared in the slips, in hope that a historic profile of the usage of Characters in Eastern Han Dynasty can be revealed.
