真切而形象地描摹二三十年代知识分子穷困潦倒、为生计而穷奔乱突的可怜可悲境地 ,垂怜他眼中孩童难以料定的生命悲苦 ,张氏身边小说里这种绵延不绝的人道主义情怀与五四文学对人主体精神的颂扬是契合一致的 ,其超常冷静的远距离观照 ,使得他的身边小说与郭、郁的哭喊或倾诉比较起来更具生活的凝重与厚度。
