Based on the apporach of descriptive translation studies and Lefevere' s translation theory, this paper explores the phenomenon of translating The Gadfly written by Ethel Lilian Voynich, an Irish authoress in China during the 1950' s in an attempt to demonstrate that translating The Gadfly constituted a unique cultural and political act, which is enlisted in the then cultural agenda, and the translated text became a canonical work exerting a considerable influence on the Chinese youths in the target-language society.
