Adaptations Made by Lin Yutang in His English Translation of Ancient Chinese Verses

变通是诗词翻译中的常用手段,当原诗(词)具有很大的抗译性,或者原诗(词)虽无较大抗译性,但经过变通处理后译文能取得比原文更好的表达效果时,均可采用变通手法.可从词语、句子、音韵、文化因素等各个层面探讨林语堂在其英译诗(词)中所采用的各种变通手法.

Adaptations are often made in verse translation. This paper points out two premises on which adaptations should be made, namely, the poems (including ci) in the source language have great anti - translatability, or even if they have no such kind of anti - translatability, once adaptations have been made, the translated texts have better expressive effects. It mainly analyzes the various adaptations made by Lin Yutang in different respects of words and phrases, sentences, rhymes and rhythms, and cultural elements.
