在诗歌形成初期，诗和乐是不分家的，它们作为一个有机整体统一于诗歌之中。唐代的声诗继承了这一传统，集乐、舞、声、容于一身。到了宋代，唐代歌诗之法逐渐不传，音乐与诗歌创作渐趋分离，出现了大量的脱离音乐的纯文学创作的诗歌，而作为一种大众娱乐方式的功能由词来充当。与此同时，唐、宋诗这两种不同风格诗歌也形成了。诗歌风格的形成离不开诗歌发展的自身规律和诗歌所处的政治、经济、文化环境，其中音乐对诗歌创作的规定性有重要意义。
