城市文化是地域文化的集中表现，地域(区域)文化构成民族文化的多样性。民族文化是文化国力生生不息的源泉，发掘、研究、彰显城市文化特色是探索“中国特色城镇化道路”的重大课题。独特的“江海文化”孕育和发展了南通城市，江海文化的杰出代表张謇营造“南通——中国近代第一城”，铸就了令世人瞩目的南通近代辉煌。南通在新世纪要获得更大的发展必须承传历史文脉，加强文化的自觉意识，彰显自己的城市文化特色。

the national culture is the source of the incessant cultural force in a country, and to discern, study, and demonstrate city cultural characteristics are a fundamentally important topic in the exploration of urbanization passage with Chinese characteristics. Nantong city was born and developed by the peculiar river-and-sea culture, whose extraordinary representative Zhang Jian constructed this first city in modern Chinese history, making the splendid achievement which attracts world wide attention. To obtain further development in the new millennium Nantong should enhance her awareness of cultural consciousness, display her own peculiar city culture, inherit her historic culture, and make more splendid achievements.
