南通历史文化作为一种地域文化，具有过渡地带文化的显著特征。其特点可用八个字概括：襟江负海，南风北韵。“襟江负海”指南通人特定的生存环境亦即南通历史文化的分布空间，“南风北韵”则是南通历史文化的特定模式和传统。这也可从地域文化内涵的三个主要方面——宗教、语言(方言)、文化心理得到印证。南通文化最早是由盐文化演变而来的，盐文化是南通历史文化的最底层。

As a kind of area culture, Nantong's history and culture has remarkable characteristics of transitional area. It can be summarized with 'near by river and sea, graceful bearing of south and north'. The former means the special living environment of Nantong people, that is the space of Nantong's history and culture. The latter means the special culture mode and tradition, which can proved by three aspects of intentions of area culture: religion, language (dialect) and culture. And Nantong's culture earliest developed from the salt culture, which is the bottom of Nantong's history and culture.
