On the Tragic Characters and Imagery in Four Shakespearean Tragedies

虹影是英国籍华人女作家。进入90年代以来,她的复杂的经历及其创作的小说、诗歌,在海内外引起了广泛的关注。虹影的小说充满了极端的女性经验,以诡秘而犀利的文风,在文坛独树一帜,其作品也成为当今最有争议的一类。

The essence of Shakespearean Dramas is the four traged ies,in which employing the fantastic imagery is one of most praiseworthy brilli ances, i.e. utilizing imagery to portray the personalities of tragic characters, to present the characters' virtue and evil by contrast, and to predict the trag ic fate of heroes. This paper aims to analyze from the three aspects the functio ns of imagery in the shaping of the characters in four Shakespearean tragedies.
