Among the immigrants who arrived in the United States in the nineteenth century the German and the Irish were the two largest groups. Under the influence of their respective traditions and the social conditions at that time they made different contributions to economic development. Still, both groups had separate effects on the evolution of American politics and showed distinct patterns in the course of acculturation. Since both the number of the German immigrants and that of the Irish immigrants were very large, their differences had a strong impact on the political, economic and cultural development in the United States.
