Since the Qin Dynasty,Chaozhou and the whole Lingnan region had been under the administration of the Northern Dynasties of China. But the interation of the Dynasties' influences and the local societies was a long and complex interactive process. In this process changes in the Song & Yuan times and the end of the Ming and the start of the Qing are of important significance. The King of the Three Mountains and the God of Double Loyalty were the most popular gods in Chaozhou's rural temples. The making of the cults of the two gods and the changes of their symbolic meanning are closely related to the complex interactive integration of the Dynasties' influences and local societies.
