The Unites States and the Soviet Union contended for hegemony everywhere in the world in the cold war era.South Asia could not be spared by the two super powers.This article discusses the U\^S\^policy towards South Asia in and before the 1980s through a study of American interest in South Asia,American knowledge and understanding of India and Pakistan,American policy towards South Asia and its influences and the major characteristics of the U\^S\^ South Asian policy.
