Re--examine the Theory of Modern Chinese Literature Starting from May 4th Movement

在语言作为思想本体的层面上,现代白话与古代白话有质的区别。"五四"白话文学运动的发起者们并没有从根本上认识到现代白话的现代思想性质,他们关于提倡白话和废除文言的理由并不具有根本性,他们是在语言工具的意义上发动新文学运动的,但却意外地导致了思想革命。"五四"白话文学运动从根本上不同于晚清白话文运动和20世纪三四十年代的大众语文运动。

On the stratum of language as an ideological ontology, modern Chinese is essentially different from ancient Chinese. The initiators of May 4th modern Chinese literary movement did not recognize at its root the modern ideological characteristics of modern Chinese language. The reasons for sponsoring modern Chinese and abolishing ancient Chinese were not essential. They launched the new literary movement in the sense of linguistic instrument, but led in an unforeseen way to ideological revolution. May 4th modern Chinese movement was essentially different from the modern language movement in late Qing Dynasty and the mass language movement in 1930s and 1940s.
