孟子的人格精神由两个方面构成 ,一为无所畏惧的阳刚之气所体现出来的独立人格精神 ,一为愤懑不平之气所体现出来的依附性人格。这两个方面对立统一就构成孟子文化人格的悲剧二重性 ,它是孟子散文气势最根本的内在人格成因。此种悲剧性人格外在表现为知识分子的角色特质、天赋要求与实际社会角色、社会环境的矛盾 ,而背后却是社会历史发展中固有的人与外在环境冲突的悲剧性“二律背反”。

Menciuss personality consists of two aspects. One is independent character embodied in his strong temperament. The other is dependent character embodied in his indignant temperament. The contrast and unity of the two aspects compose of Menciuss tragic and contradictory cultural character. It becomes the essential character background in the vigor of Menciuss essays. Its external expression is the contradiction of scholars inborn role, mentality and their actual social roles, but its internal background is the tragic contradiction between human being and circumstances during historic social development.
