Application of Interchangeable Characters in Chinese Folk Custom

通假不仅存在于古代汉语中，而且在现代民俗活动中仍然广泛地运用着，如欢庆春节、结婚生子、升官发财、祝寿祈福等。它具有地域性、多向性、随机性、约定俗成性等特点。

Interchangeable characters are used not only in ancient Chinese but also in modern folk custom, especially on the occasions of celebrating the Spring Festival, wedding, new birth, promotion, making a fortune, oftering birthday congratulation, and praying for happiness. Interchangeable characters are created at random and accepted through common practice. So different dialects have different interchangeable characters and one character may have several substitutions or be used to substitute for several characters.
