在明代冯梦龙选编的用当时吴语方言写成的民歌集《山歌》中,指代词已经组成一个完整的系统,包括人称代词、指示代词和疑问代词及某些代词的变式。明代苏州一带的吴语区域(包括今苏州、湖州和嘉兴)较今天大,加上文人记录修改时加入其他地域的书面语成份,指代词数量比现代苏州语多。

The Wu-Yu-dialect anthology of folk song Sang GE compiled by FENG Meng-long in Ming Dynasty indicate the pronoun in ancient Suzhou had formed a comprehensive system, consisting of personal pronoun, demonstrative pronoun, interrogative pronoun and the variant of some other pronoun. With a wider area around Suzhou (including Suzhou, Huzhou and Jiaxing at present time) in Ming Dynasty, and written language from other area supplemented by scholars in recording and revising, there are more pronoun in Ming Dynasty.
