By the end of 1980s, the Southeast Asian Chinese had mostly completed the transition from Overseas Chinese to Ethnic Chinese communities, because most of them became nationals of their adopted countries after citizenship was offered. Affected by the special circumstances created during the Cold War, the transformation of the Southeast Asian Chinese's i-dentities was rather complicated. The end of the transformation means that the title of 'Overseas Chinese', used for a long time,is rather outdated now, and that certain adjustments must be made in practical works as well as academic research. As citizens of Southeast Asian countries, ethnic Chinese enjoy full social and political rights in some countries but are somewhat discriminated with being regarded as second - class citizens in other countries. The Southeast Asian Chinese usually do not have any control for their social and political status since they are minority groups in their adopted countries except in Singapore.
