Shuyuan, an institute of education, or similar institutions might have appeared during the Tang Dynasty. The most important reason for its rise is the development of printing technology. The development phases can be explored from various aspects such as the construction of the schooling mechanism and the academic ideas. Shuyuan were mostly private-owned, operated by local scholars. As universities in ancient times, they were higher education institutions with the functions of cultivating high-level talents, storing academic books, and a gathering place for scholars of different schools of thought.
