This paper concludes the similarity and differences of English and Chinese vague languages in realizing polite function .English vague language lays particular stress on seeking common points to show politeness, complying with the principles of approval and sympathy, while Chinese vague language employs 'esteeming others through depreciating oneself' to express politeness, emphasizing the principles of praise and modesty. It also analyzes the theoretical basis of these differences, which is certain cultural and historical factors of English and Chinese language communities.
