Kawabata Yasunari explored and expounded, on many occasions, the relationship between Eastern literature and Western literature, and that between Japanese national literature and modern foreign literature. By examining his discussions of the issue in different periods of time, this essay argues that he essentially advocated a combination of the East and the West with the East playing a dominant role.
