The American postmodernist writer William Gaddis employs the postmodernist technique of indeterminacy in his fictional writing. This constitutes the paradoxical contradiction, the juxtaposition, the discontinuity and the randomness in his novel The Carpenter's Gothic, offering an indictment of the interpenetration between government, religious institution, business and media in the quest for big profits in the American society . Gaddis thus succeeds in turning the whole structure of his novels into a huge metaphor of the post-industrial United States, refracting a labyrinthine capitalist world haunted by ambiguity, indeterminacy and contingency.
