The Rise of Translating Institutions in The Late Qing Dynasty and The Role of American Missionaries in China

从第一次鸦片战争到洋务运动的历史进程中,中国出现的翻译机构几乎是清一色颇有特质的教会机构,在华美国传教士在其中起到国人不可替代的作用,他们的译著在当时产生了相当大的反响。这些机构是19世纪末20世纪初纷纷涌现的本土翻译机构的楷模,在中国近代翻译史上写下独具异域色彩的一章。

Between the First Opium War and the Westernization Movement, there appeared in China translating institutions with special characteristics, which almost were religious institutions in which American missionaries in China played a positive role that could not be replaced by the Chinese then, and their versions produced quite an important effect. These institutes became demonstrative examples for many national translating institutions appearing from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, and wrote a brilliant chapter in the modern history of Chinese translation.
