Courtship and engagement begin a new round of customs that lead up to a grand finale in marriage, the most tradition--regulated personal ceremony in American life. Here time has changed but not diminished the role of folklore. Couples formerly were granted the family parlor or porch swing for courting; today they have the family automobile.
